== Geschichte ==<br />
Niort weist prähistorische und galloröm. Siedlungsspuren auf und besitzt eine merow. Nekropole (St-Martin). Der Name leitet sich ab von Niortum (neue Furt) und entstand 946 am linken Ufer. Es bestand zunächst aus 2 Teilen: um die Kirchen St-André und ND. Um 1200 wurden sie von einer 2,8 km langen Stadtmauer umschlossen.<br />

Im 13. Jh. führte Niort den Poitouwein in ganz Europa aus. 1262 erwarb es mit anderen Städten wichtige Handelsprivilegien. Eine Judengemeinde ist für die Zeit nachgewiesen. 1260 gründeten Franziskaner einen Konvent mit Schule. Der 100jährige Krieg brachte den Weinhandel zum erliegen. <br />

Niort war zur Zeit der ma. SdC-Wallfahrt ein Knotenpunkt der Pilgerwege. Es besaß 3 Armenspitäler und ein Krankenhaus. Leider zeugen nur wenige Gebäude hiervon. Erhalten ist eine schöne Zinnenburg (12.Jh).<br />

ND (15./16. Jh.) besitzt einen 75 m hohen Turm (15. Jh.). Das got. Nordportal ist fein gearbeitet. Im Innern sind Teppiche aus Aubusson und Mausoleen (17. Jh.) aus rotem Marmor, ein got. Taufbecken (16. Jh.) und ein schönes Chorgestühl.<br />
