== Geschichte ==<br />
Um 700 wurde hier an der Loire ein Kloster gegründet, das zur Keimzelle von La Charité (= Barmherzigkeit) wurde. Im 11. Jh. gründete Cluny hier ein Priorat mit 200 Mönchen. Zu ihm gehörten in der Blüte 50 Filialen. Das Kloster litt unter den Religionskriegen und der Frz.Rev. <br />

=== Ste-Croix-ND de la Charité ===<br />
Ste-Croix-ND de la Charité (11./12. Jh.) war nach Cluny III mit 122 m Länge die ehemals größte Kirche Frankreichs. Brände verwüsteten sie im 13. und 16. Jh. So zur Ruine geworden, wurde das Schiff nicht in voller Länge errichtet. Man begnügte sich nun mit 4 Jochen, dem Querschiff und dem Chor. Die Abtei war eine vielbesuchte Station der ma. Pilger. - Heute ist der rom. Turm und die alte Fassade mit dem Hauptportal von der jetzigen Kirche getrennt. Am Fuß des Turmes ist das Tympanon eines Portals angebracht. Die heutige Kirche zeigt ein Querschiff von riesigen Ausmaßen, einen majestätischen Triumpfbogen und einen faszinierenden rom. Chor. <br />

Victor Hugo: In La Charité-sur-Loire, nächst Bourges, gibt es eine rom. Kirche, die an Größe und Reichtum der Architektur mit den berühmtesten in Europa wetteifern kann – aber sie ist eine halbe Ruine.<br />
